We have a diverse readership in the arts and internationally. In the last 30 days we have had 9,531 visits with 6,800 unique visitors. At this time we plan to feature several works by a single artist on our online publication. The work will be presented on the site for six months and the artist will be awarded a $100 honorarium. I thought I’d take the lead and post my statement and my latest work on the site – soon I’ll do a tutorial night at my house and everyone can do this too. Ellen Gradman volunteered to create a print instruction for posting to the site.

Statement

I keep hearing that it’s the “American Dream” to live in the suburbs with a big house and a picket fence, green lawn. The Dream seems to be constituted of an interesting marketing ploy – you will also need furniture, a car, two cars, a lawn mower, etc – and in our minds it makes a nice picture. The reality of this kind of Dream though is different. It requires an unsustainable amount of natural resources and the planet is groaning under its demands. And, it doesn’t really make Americans happy anyway.

The reason I mention this is that it’s kind of like plastic bags. We don’t really need them, they are causing appalling environmental devastation that we may never recover from, yet they symbolize prosperity, safety, cleanliness… and they’re often quite pretty.

This work combines the attractiveness of one of our addictions with fantasy forms inspired by the ocean creatures that are being transformed by it. It represents a continuation of water/ nature themes from my paintings and is meant to be experienced on the body, from the inside, where there are only a few holes to peer out of but still, there is a choice of holes.
